簡(jiǎn)介:英國PhotoSynergy 公司推出一種新型發(fā)光二極管(LED)光纖照明技術(shù),旨在提高海底設(shè)備安裝效率。

UK-based PhotoSynergy has developed a new light-emitting diode (LED) fiber-illumination technology designed to enhance subsea installations. Touted as an energy efficient alternative to traditional light sources, the new umbilical illuminator technology known as the PSL-3000-M is ready for testing later this month by subsea divers in western Scotland.

PhotoSynergy, a limited company formed by the University of St Andrews, states that the technology will supply a continuous line of light for subsea divers, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and tethered operations by offering a permanent light source for subsea navigation. The technology is capable of lighting up to 100 m of fiber optic cable and is visible at depths of up to 150 m.

The PSL-3000-M is small, lightweight, and capable of operating on mains or direct current with battery back-up or singular battery power, depending on the application’s needs. The system’s control box can remain on the surface or be housed in a diving bell or ROV, with no actual power source residing in the side-emitting fiber optic cable. The illuminator uses as little as 7 W of power, making it one of the most energy efficient fiber illuminators on the market, according to the company.

The system was designed to ensure that optimum light output is channeled down the fiber with maximum power efficiency. The core product produces a green light, which PhotoSynergy states is the color proven to be nearest the peak eye response for optimal visibility in low light or darkness. Operating mode can be switched between steady illumination or on/off flashing mode, which could be used as an emergency signal in the event of an incident.

The technology is being trialed by divers at The Underwater Center in Fort William, western Scotland. The center is located on the shores of Loch Linnhe, where water depths reach 150 m, deeper than most parts of the North Sea. In addition, the testing location has a sheltered position, meaning that testing can be carried out year-round in even the most extreme weather conditions.

This first industry trial of the technology at the center will involve testing at various depths. The fiber optic cable will be attached to two diver umbilicals as they perform a diver rescue. Two of the Underwater Center’s ROVs will be used for the trial?one to perform diver observations of the rescue and the other to monitor the overall operation.

In announcing the planned testing, Steve Ham, general manager of The Underwater Center said, “We are delighted that PhotoSynergy has chosen The Underwater Center for testing its LED fiber illuminator … It’s an exciting trial for PhotoSynergy as the company will be able to determine the effectiveness of the technology at a range of depths and receive feedback from subsea divers as to the advantages of the technology.”

PhotoSynergy’s Managing Director Don Walker said, “The PSL-3000-M is the output of many years of work on laser based systems and we are encouraged by initial discussions with manufacturers and users of umbilicals within the subsea industry. As with any new innovation, it’s important to subject the technology to real life trials, ensuring it meets the challenges that are faced in the offshore environment. We chose The Underwater Centre because of its world-class facilities and the significant support on offer from the experienced subsea team at the center.”
